Dropped Out Of Corporate Life: One Year Later

Hey E-preneur! So on January 25, 2017 I quit my full-time job of 5 years and today marks my one year anniversary….YAY!! Transforming into a full-time entrepreneur has been a challenge but I am so happy that I had the courage to do it and still have kept going.

I just wanted to share with you some lessons I have learned from being a full-time entrepreneur and tips you should use if you’re planning to quit your full-time job and take a leap on faith.

SAVE FOR AT LEAST 3 MONTHS OF BILLS: this is probably the most important thing if you really want to quit your job and be a full time entrepreneur. Although when I quit my job it was totally random and not planned at all, I still made sure I had enough money to last me for at least 3 months just incase my businesses weren’t bringing in enough income during that time. I was planning to quit my job for quite some months prior however I just didn’t know exactly when I was going to do it.

SUBMIT A TWO WEEKS NOTICE OR SOME TYPE OF NOTICE: so this is probably the most unprofessional thing I have ever done and usually I am so “Pro-Professionalism” but when I quit my job I did not give a two weeks notice, I really just decided that day was going to be the day I quit and it was. I did write a nice email to my supervisor and explained to him why I was leaving (although I never got a response from him) :(  So come up with a two weeks notice and send it over to your boss so you aren’t burning any bridges.

CREATE A SCHEDULE: I cannot stress how important it is to have a daily schedule. When you are working for yourself you will often feel like it’s okay to just sleep in late and do what ever you want when you want to but that is WRONG. You must put yourself on a set schedule and discipline yourself to actually work because if not you are going to definitely be struggling. You no longer have a boss telling you step by step what you need to do, so you have to be that BOSS and discipline yourself.

TAKE A DAY OR TWO OFF: something I really struggle with and am slowly getting better at is putting to much pressure on myself and not giving myself enough credit. I beat myself up a lot thinking that I am not doing enough so most of the time I am literally working all day and getting mad at myself if I have too much free time. You have to learn to take some breaks and regroup. Overworking yourself will only lead to stress and not being as productive as you should. Self-care is important so practice it and give yourself a break.

CREATE OTHER FORMS OF INCOME OR DOWNSIZE: unless you quit your full-time job because you are already making millions in your business then you are going to have to do more than just your one business if you want to keep your bills paid. You will need to either create other sources of income or downsize on what you have so that you are able to still pay your bills on time. Although I quit my job to do VITAL XII and ON TWELVE MANAGEMENT full-time I still do side-hustles to make sure I have my bills paid such as doing site inspections for small businesses and Air BNB’ing out my apartment. I cut off my cable to because it’s extremely unnecessary and a distraction.

ASK FOR HELP WHEN NEEDED: I know it may be hard to ask other people for help when YOU were the person who decided to quit your job, however, if you need help then just ask for it! Everyday may not be a good day and some days you just not meet your income goals so its okay to call a family member or friend to just get a little help. My mom has received many calls from me LOL.

CHANGE YOUR MINDSET: when you were a child I’m sure you heard many times that “if you believe it you can achieve it” or “you can do anything you put your mind to” and those are some of the truest statements ever. Your thoughts are what fuels you and keep you going. You have to feed your mind positive thoughts because those thoughts will keep you grounded. Be grateful for everything you already have and use your mind to take you places you want to go.
